Kalinjar Fort & Neelkanth Temple #KhajurahoWithTheLalit
Situated on the Vindhya range, Kalinjar fort dates back to the 7th century. The Neelkanth Temple, located inside the fort, is one of the most revered holy shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to legend, the poison which was thrown up after the Samudra Manthan was swallowed and stored in his throat by Lord Shiva. His throat turned blue and thereafter he also became known as Neelkantha which is the reason why the temple is called Neelkanth.
Chitrakoot's beauty and spiritual legacy stretches back to legendary ages. It is in its deep forests where Rama, Sita and his brother Lakshmana spent eleven and half years of their fourteen years of exile.
These ghats that line the Mandakini river were where, Rama, Lakshmana and Sita performed their daily abulations during their exile period. It is also believed that, it was at these ghats that they appeared before the poet Tulsidas.
