The history of the hotel traces back to 1830s, when David Wilson started the Great Eastern Bakery to serve the English people working in Calcutta. In 1840 the Auckland Hotel was opened which was popularly known as Wilson’s Hotel till 1865 when it was renamed as the Great Eastern Hotel.

Asia’s first luxury hotel, had the distinction of being the longest continuously operating hotel (165 years) till 2005 when it closed for renovation. It was represented to Kolkata as The LaLiT Great Eastern Kolkata in 2013.
