Stay in Style - The Lalit Traveller Jaipur

When people think of India, they often imagine an exotic and verdant country, bursting with brightly coloured saris, spicy dal, aromatic chai and bustling streets. These things are very much a part of India, but there is so much more to this diverse and exciting part of the world.

When travellers come to Jaipur in the northern state of Rajasthan, they often spend time at the museums and art galleries that highlight local culture and history. They experience the artwork that specifically highlights Rajasthani culture throughout the city. And they explore a wide variety of artisan crafts, such as jewellery, bandhani, and block printing.

Whether you find your inspiration in the festivals and cultural events hosted in Jaipur or in the artisan crafts, we invite you to consider staying at The Lalit Traveller.

‘A country that holds a special place in Jacqueline’s [Co-Founder & Design Director at Jac+ Jack] heart, experience the beautiful culture of Rajasthan at The Lalit Traveller Hotel.’

Our comfortable, well-appointed rooms are close to the major cultural destinations of the city. We also have an in-location spa to help you relax and rejuvenate your creative spirit along with a Multi-cuisine outlet “Café Express”.

We were thrilled to be recently featured in an article by Expedia describing the places around the world that inspired fashion designers.

However, in the run-up to the first full Budget of the Modi government, she speaks about the industry wish-list of rationalizing subsidies and taking steps for making it easier to do business in India:

OKO'S Nouveau Avatar

Experience the epicurean metamorphosis

September 19, 2014, Bangalore: OKO, the most talked about Pan Asian restaurant in the city had its door open for a service makeover for its discerning and loyal customer spectrum. Not by its architecture but by introducing a new twist to the existing service story and by revealing the new enticing dining menu, The Lalit Ashok re-presented their most celebrated restaurant to the city bon vivants.

This rooftop restaurant, which already enjoys an extravagant adulation for its epicurean magic has strategized to broaden its customer base. The target market currently is the upper niche above 30 years but the management feels that OKO, by virtue of its location, contemporary architecture and luscious food and beverage can cater to the younger generation who are equal spenders in the current gourmet scenario.

OKO introduced OKO Sound Bara new Food & Beverage and sound experience. The outlet will fuse some highly euphonious lounge music by some popular DJs intricately mixed with live instrumental performances along with dexterously crafted food by our in-house master chefs. The theme was inspired by such bars in the European Countries which soon became popular among foreign travelers and contemporary tourists. These performances on the weekends will offer an exclusive setup under the moonlit stars and amalgamated with some creative cocktails, will form the apt blend for that gilt-edged experience for the discerning customers.

OKO brought about a new aroma with its new eclectic and specialized menu. The menu has been re-engineered to suit the palates across all ages. Being the city’s largest and trendiest Asian influenced restaurant, OKO had served its customers with authentic cuisines of Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Indonesian and Malaysian. The new Asian-inspired flavours promise to be in sync with customers’ cravings towards oriental cuisines, keeping the signature palates of OKO intact. OKO Master Chef – Vijay Thapliyal along with Executive Sous Chef Gopal Jha, Thai Master Chef – Paitoon Panphan and Chinese Master Chef – Lee Camp Fung have specially designed the new enticing OKO menu which includes a mélange of vegetarian and non-vegetarian of Teppanyaki Cuisine, Oriental Grills, OKO signature rolls, main dishes, starters, salads, soups and desserts.

The ever popular dishes like Kai Haw Baitoye, Chilli Crab, Pla Laad Phrik and Hed Himaphan are there to stay by its popular demand whereas dishes like Thord Man Khad Phad, Penang Poo, Plameuk Thord & Kafir Lime Baked Yogurt will be crafted by our bravura chefs to delight the senses of all.

In this journey of OKO’s epicurean metamorphosis, for about a month, the hotel had invited few food connoisseurs who form a part of the esteemed brigade of our valued brand ambassadors, to have the first taste and present their candid opinion after having tried some of the brand new delectable dishes that were crafted by our accomplished culinarians. Dr. Chytra, Mr. Chetan Kamani, Mr. Aslam Gafoor, Mr. Rishad Minocher, Mr. Shibata Yosuke, Ms. Usha Subramanian, Mr. Kripal Amanna to name a few dined at the restaurant as part of this exercise. Their feedback & comments were carefully taken into consideration to improve the quality of food & its presentation. This was our team’s unflinching endeavour behind the grand epicurean metamorphosis.

Commenting on the new menu launch at OKO, Mr. Bhaskaran T, GM, The Lalit Ashok said, “As a trend setter in offering high-end Food & Beverage experiences, it gives us immense pleasure to introduce a new shade to OKO. With this new menu launch, I’m very much certain about positioning ourselves as a top-notch in offering oriental cuisines with high-quality, creativity, originality and reasonable price in this fiercely competitive market.”

The curtain raiser to this splendor was held on September 19, 2014 Mr. Bhaskaran invited the city’s gourmet enthusiasts like Ms. Rubi & Mr. Imtiaz, Ms. Shalini & Mr. Rohit Chopra, Actress Tina Ponappa, Mrs. & Mr. Ram Chugh, Mr. Aslam Gafoor and Ms. Roopa Mouli to witness the splendid evening. And the journey into this divine experience has began thereafter.

Top 10 wine librarise in India

The first among contemporary Indian dining spaces to think that a wine room was the way forward. Apart from the sumptuous fare that has become synonymous with the Baluchi Brand, it was this wine room located right across from the bread bar (yet another unprecedented concept) that became the starting point of many a meal at this place. The place is well stocked and the wines by the glass are always on display, as also available to taste.

A leader must be unbiased and patient

Dr. Jyotsna Suri, Chairperson and Managing Director, The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, has been associated with the group since its inception in 1987. Ever since taking over as chairman and managing director in 2006, Suri has been the driving force of the group’s operations across India. She spoke to HT on a range of leadership issues. Excerpts:

How do you define a leader? A leader must have a clear vision and the ability to lead his/her team towards achieving it. He/she should be able to overcome adversities and guide the organisation through bad times. What are the three most important traits of a leader? A leader must be unbiased, patient and should possess people management skills. As a leader of your group, how do you cultivate leaders? By recognising capabilities and delegating responsibilities accordingly.

Can a manager become a leader? Leadership is inherent. However, it can be honed over a period of time. For a manager to become a leader, he/she should give equal opportunity to all; be patient and unbiased and recognise and nurture the strengths of team members as well as help overcome their weaknesses. What leader is in the a privately-promoted role of a professional and a government-owned company? Whether it is a privately-promoted or a government-owned company, the role of a leader remains the same — to have a clear vision and lead the team to achieve that vision. Since September 2008, the world has seen a number of crises. What is the role of a leader in these times? The role of a leader is to keep the morale of the employees high always, particularly during critical times and steer the organisation out of the crisis. What has been your biggest leadership challenge? My biggest challenge was to give our brand a very strong and distinct identity. On November 19, 2008, I charted a brand change for the company. All luxury hotels now fly “The Lalit” flag while the mid-segment Hotels are branded as “The Lalit Traveller”, under The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group. Leaders have to often carry the cross of other’s wrongdoings and inefficiencies. What role can good leadership play to counterbalance this image? A strong and successful leader should be able to take up challenges and guide his team irrespective of the wrongdoings and inefficiencies of others. What is your one-line leadership mantra?

Never give in. Who are the leaders who have inspired you? Mahatma Gandhi — a man who rose to become a force that singlehandedly changed the history of India. Aung San Suu Kyi – a frail yet mentally-strong woman who relentlessly fought for what she believed in. Who is a leader in your industry whom you respect? There is something to learn from each person I come across. What is the biggest leadership lesson that you have learnt? To stand for what you believe in, fearlessly. Also, leaders must give back to the society. As a hotelier, I believe in “developing destinations”, not just hotels. It is the people at the destinations that account for the success of the group’s hotels and therefore our initiatives involve the local population, their handicrafts, culture, food, thereby giving them training and employment to boost the economic environment. What is the best leadership decision that you have taken? Rebranding the chain and initiating the “developing destinations” concept. What has been your worst leadership decision? Out of thousands of decisions that one takes, there will be few which may not prove to be the best. However, I have no regrets.

Kolkata's iconic Auckland Hotel reopens as The Lalit Great Eastern

Auckland Hotel, which opened in the city during the British Raj in 1841 this day, today reopened in its new avatar as The Lalit Great Eastern Hotel, the latest addition to the list of five-star deluxe properties in the metropolis.

Inaugurating the re-launch of the hotel here, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said it was because of the great dreams of late Lalit Suri that led to the reopening of the hotel.

From Auckland Hotel, the hotel's name got changed to Great Eastern. The Delhi-based Lalit Suri group acquired the property from the West Bengal government in 2005 at a price of Rs 52 crore.

Banerjee said it was good to see that many new hotels were coming up in the city which indicated more visitors were coming here from outside the state and abroad.

Chairperson of The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group Dr. Jyotsna Suri said the hotel had immense historic value due to its heritage status and was reopened today to coincide with the birth anniversary of her husband who expired in 2006.

She said the hotel was called 'Jewel of the East' during the British Raj and was host to guests like Queen Elizabeth II, Rudyard Kipling and Mark Twain.

The total renovation cost of the hotel would be around Rs 320 crore, she said, adding the entire hotel would become operational in six months time after completion of work in the two heritage blocks.

Today, only two blocks consisting of 200 rooms were opened.

FICCI says JK needs investment policy

Srinagar, June 17: Chairperson, Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( FICCI), Dr. Jyotsna Suri today urged the government to come up with an ‘ Investment Policy’ in J& K. At a conference ‘ J& K Tourism: The Way Forward’ organized by it in collaboration with Suri Hospitality Group here today, the FICCI presented a memorandum to the government highlighting demands of tourism industry.

The chamber demanded enhanced air, train and road connectivity to boost tourism in the state, while suggesting several steps the government should take immediately for the entertainment and convenience of the tourists.

It asked the government to resume sound- and- light shows in Shalimar garden and other tourist spots. The other demands the FICCI put forth before the government included: Develop high quality toilet facilities at all major attractions, create leisure activities for tourist after sun down, enhance marketing activities, etc.

In regard to connectivity, it suggested daily air flights should be introduced and prices rationalized. “ Holiday specials ( trains) should be introduced from all state capitals and the government should improve quality of roads leading to new destinations like Yousmarg, Wular lake, etc.” Speaking on the sidelines of the event, chairperson FICCI, Dr. Jyotsna Suri told Greater Kashmir that FICCI by organizing this event had brought together the tourism stakeholders. “ Today’s event offered a joint platform to the stakeholders including the central Tourism Ministry, state government and private tourism players in J& K to discuss issues, challenges, policies and programmes related to tourism,” she said.

Suri said the FICCI was committed to help the J& K tourism to grow. “ We shall organize a brainstorming session in Srinagar with the local trade as well as the travel industry across India and come up with solutions and commitment from the private sector to take J& K tourism forward,” Suri who is also CMD, The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group.

She said the FICCI shall also hold a tourism road show at New Delhi. “ We will also bring out a dedicated knowledge paper that will identify the challenges, potential and proposals to take tourism in Jammu and Kashmir to the next level.” Pertinently, the chief minister Omar Abdullah on the occasion said: “ The conferences, sessions and reports by FICCI on the development of tourism in J& K are welcome steps.” However, he hastened to add: “ We will be benefited in actual terms when you motivate the investors to invest in the State in tourism and other sectors.” The meeting was participated by the Union Minister for Tourism, Subodh Kant Sahai, Union Minister of State for Tourism, Sultan Ahmad, J& K Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather, Minister for Tourism, Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister of State for Tourism, Nasir Aslam Wani, Parliament Members Ghulam Nabi Rattanpuri, Dr Mehboob Beg, Sharief- ud- Din Shariq, Union Tourism Secretary, R. H. Khawaja, Commissioner Secretary Tourism, Atal Dullo, senior officers from the Centre and the State and various representatives from tourism trade and commerce, travel agencies and hotel and houseboat associations.

Emotional commitment brought us here: Dr Suri

Srinagar, June 17: In the 13th year of its operations in the Valley, she recalls that it was the “ emotional commitment to the nation” that actually brought her here in 1998.

CMD, The Lalit Suri Hospitalality Group, Dr Jyotsna Suri says it was more of an emotional commitment than the commercial viability that had convinced her to invest in the troubled Valley.

“ When we took over this property in 1998, it was all in a shambles. This picturesque spot that you see today was all dingy with unwanted gross grown widely around. The place was ravaged after it had been abandoned,” she says.

“ After take over, we never let this hotel to stop even for a single day irrespective of the conditions that prevailed in the Valley and unmindful of the fact whether it was commercially viable,” she says.

Had the decision ultimately proved commercially viable? She responds: “ It has never been commercially viable. However, during last three years we did not suffer operational losses.” “ We were doing good last year till unrest gripped Kashmir,” she says, adding that the impact of the last year turbulence has cast its shadows on this year too. “ As per our estimates Kashmir would get 1.5 lakh less tourists this year than actually it could have got, due to the impact of the last year abnormal situations,” she says.

On the need for investment in Kashmir, she says while as chairperson of FICCI she invites outside business houses to come to the Valley, “ I feel myself in a better position to do it since I have myself invested here.” However, she acknowledges that no reputable business house in India has invested in Kashmir. “ I wonder a segment of local media here had earlier reported that Taj opens first five- star hotel in Kashmir.

Actually, Taj has only entered into a management contract, it has not invested a single penny in Kashmir,” she says.

She says the Lalit Grand Palace Srinagar has no competition in the state and no comparison all over India. “ This is a super luxury brand. This property is a heritage and has historical significance. I cannot compare it with any hotels in India particularly given its rich locales.” “ There is a dire need to have an investment policy on hand. When Invested I found family connections here smoothened my way and made it possible. But everyone cannot have such a route available. So there is a dire need to have investment policy which would attract the investors,” she says.

She says that FICCI would use its offices to prevent “ negative imaging of Kashmir” by some media groups in India.
